    January Arrives Early - (12/17)

MINNEAPOLIS Nearly as sweet as the NFL playoffs is the desperation that precedes them. We saw it Sunday night in the Meadowlands, where the more desperate team, the one that simply couldn't afford to lose, beat the one that didn't have that sense of urgency -- yet. The playoffs may not begin until the first Saturday of January but don't kid yourself. Single elimination is here, or so teams feel going into the final two weeks of the regular season.

The Sentence Reflects the Lies - (12/10)

ATLANTA -- It caught most of us by surprise, the length of the sentence handed down Monday, when perhaps it shouldn't have. When two of his co-conspirators were sentenced a few weeks back to 18 and 21 months respectively, we should have known Michael Vick wasn't going to get a year or 15 months. He wasn't going to get less jail time than the people who delivered him to the feds. He wasn't going to get less jail time when it was his money that financed the dogfighting enterprise that was his undoing.

    A Big Win, A Big Loss - (12/06)

Usually victory on any given Sunday, Monday or even Thursday is about all that matters in the NFL, whether it's the undefeated Patriots, winless Dolphins or everybody in between. Pro football, demanding as it is, doesn't waste a lot of time with context.

With Tables Turned, No Mercy Is Shown - (12/05)

As sweet as his disposition is most of the time, Caron Butler can look at the end of the Wizards' bench and become annoyed quickly. The last time the Cleveland Cavaliers were in Washington, last April for the playoffs, Butler was sitting in the very last seat on the home team sideline, his broken hand wrapped, unable to play. "That seat right there," Butler said 45 minutes before last night's tip-off. "I was sitting right there, in that seat, looking over at Agent Zero, helpless to do anything while they swept us out of the playoffs. It's been driving me ever since."

    A Tale to Tell - (12/03)

BALTIMORE If the New England Patriots put together the perfect regular season, if they can do what no NFL team has done and finish 16-0, they'll undoubtedly tell the story of the one they stole from the Baltimore Ravens. They'll smile at the memory of surviving on a cold, blustery, contentious night when the outcome was in doubt, right down to the final desperate heave and incredibly unlikely catch-and-struggle 72 inches or so from the goal line.="all"/>

Six Pack: New York Giants II - (12/19)

What follows is an answer to the chorus of complaints from the legions of fans tired of being distracted by "sensible" analysis, backed by "facts" and "knowledge." If you seek shelter from the twin storms that are "reality" and "logic," then this is your port of call. 1) Congratulations go out to the Redskins named to the Pro Bowl. And, as someone else noted, Sean Taylor's inclusion is not a sympathy vote, not by any stretch. Sean was - unquestionably - having a Pro Bowl season. 2) Did yo...

Taylor named to Pro Bowl (Yahoo! Sports) - (12/18)

Redskins owner Dan Snyder passed on some good news to Sean Taylor's family.

Sean Taylor elected to Pro Bowl - (12/18)

The Washington Redskins late great safety Sean Taylor was named to the NFC Pro Bowl, the NFL announced today. Taylor was the leading vote-getter at his position at the time of his death. The Redskins asked the league to keep Taylor’s name on the ballot. It is Taylor’s first full selection as a starter to the Pro Bowl. [...]

Redskins lose Rocky McIntosh for the season - (12/17)

Bram Weinstein on Redskin Radio reports that Redskin starting linebacker Rocky McIntosh tore his ACL and MCL during the first half of the Giants game. He will undergo surgery in the near-future and may not be recovered by the start of training camp next July. The Redskins rotated rookie linebacker H.B. Blades in the line-up replacing [...]

Defining the NFC East - (12/17)

Greg Trippiedi opened a story a few days back with the question “what is NFC East football.” Something Madden said after the Redskins-Giants game last night gave an answer. Big John alluded to the long term mutual animosity the rivals have for each other. So, while Redskins-Cowboys and Eagles-Giants might be “special” rivalries, the teams feel about the same towards every other East [...]

Byron Westbrook?s big brother is football smart - (12/17)

Philadelphia Eagle running back Brian Westbrook, brother of Redskin rookie Byron Westbrook, was in the clear for a fourth quarter touchdown against the Cowboys in Dallas. Realizing that killing the clock was more important than padding the score, Westbrook stopped short of the goal line to down the ball at the one yard line. The Eagles ran out [...]

Landry, Stingy ?D? lead Redskins to Big Road Victory - (12/16)

That didn’t take very long. Gregg Williams has found the best use of his remaining defensive personnel, and a dominating defensive performance delivered a must-win game to the Washington Redskins, a 22-10 victory over the New York Giants.  The Redskins have now established a winning streak behind journeyman quarterback Todd Collins, their first winning streak since September [...]

Patience is a virtue for Todd Collins - (12/14)

And coming off the bench for the Washington Redskins: Methuselah.  Oops, I mean 35 year old Todd Collins who, as you have heard over and over, hasn’t started a game since 1997. He’s so unknown and forgotten that the guys at Football Outsiders didn’t bother to write a profile of him in their authoratative Pro Football Prospectus 2007. Forgotten, [...]

Giants? Yin vs. Skins? Yang - (12/13)

Again this season the Redskins find themselves in a “must win” game, this time facing the New York Giants. For the Redskins to succeed they will have to exploit key weaknesses of the Giants while covering up their own. The Giants’ Yin, their dark foreboding side, must be met and defeated by the Redskins’ Yang [...]

Giants-Redskins may come down to Special Teams, Preparedness - (12/13)

If you are one of those fans who has to follow the game on the six days that aren’t gameday, you’ve probably heard a common refrain from the talking heads: “You have to love NFC East football.” Well, what the heck does that mean? How is it any different than NFC South football? It may [...]

Key to Redskins? Defensive Success: Prevent the Big Play - (12/11)

Looking at the (opponent-adjusted) defensive metrics for the defense this year, the Redskins still rank clearly above the average. Now, those who frequent Hog Heaven for post-game commentary know that I have been pretty critical of the Redskins’ defense in the second half of this season. Since the Patriots scorched them in Week [...]

Norv Turner never did that here - (12/10)

Just when we weren’t looking, and certainly did not expect it, Norv Turner’s San Diego Chargers won seven of their last nine games. With two games to go, the Chargers are two ahead of Denver, their nearest rival for the AFC West title. Seven of nine! Without checking the record, I don’t believe Turner ever pull off a [...]

    Campbell Update - (12/08)

Recently posted by the Combined Wire Services: “Jason Campbell doesn’t appear likely to return for the Washington Redskins this season, leaving the team’s playoff hopes resting on the arm of longtime bench-warmer Todd Collins. Campbell has a torn kneecap tendon which will likely require surgery, tea officials said. Collins, who’s 38 and had not thrown a [...]

Quick hits on the Redskin win - (12/07)

Fans in the stands For some reason, everyone — and I mean everyone — in the lower bowl of FedEx Field stood throughout the game last night. It’s not as though there was a movement, with one section starting it and other sections copying it. It was spontaneous. You can tell season ticket holders from first timers at Redskin games. Newbies [...]

    Campbell to Miss a Month - (12/07)

Adam Schefter reports via Mike Florio of profootballtalk.com that Jason Campbell suffered a dislocated patella, and will miss a month. Redskin nation can now breathe a collective sign of relief. Todd Collins will be the starter until Campbell can return.  Campbell will miss the rest of this regular season, possibly serving as the emergency quarterback for the [...]

    Todd Collins!!!!!?and Bears Game Recap - (12/06)

First with the important question. Who the heck is Todd Collins? The Redskin backup took over for Jason Campbell who suffered a potentially serious injury to his left knee in the 2nd quarter Thursday night.  Collins was a Brunell-esque 15 for 20 for a Brady-esque 11+ yards per attempt in relief of Campbell.  More importantly, he led [...]

Never a year like this for the Redskins - (12/06)

In 40 years of watching the Washington Redskins, I’ve never seen a year when the build-up of off field health issues crashed upon the team with increasingly grim impact. In January, Joe Gibbs revealed that his two year old grandson, Taylor, has leukemia and is undergoing chemotherapy. “Two year old” and “chemotherapy” should never be in the same [...]

For Redskins, Gibbs, Playoff Picture is Simple - (12/06)

“Playoffs? Don’t talk about playoffs. Are you kidding me? Playoffs? I’m just hoping we can win a game, another game.”-Jim Mora Sr.  There are a lot of Mathmatical formulas that can determine the percentages of a team’s playoff possibilities, but those don’t really have any meaning to the average fan.  After all, we are spoonfed our [...]

Bears might have picked Landry with Redskins first pick - (12/05)

Last April seems a long time ago in a galaxy far away to Redskins fans. Mike Mulligan at the Chicago Sun-Times recalls that the Redskins nearly pulled off a trade for linebacker Lance Briggs in return for its number one draft pick, and maybe linebacker Rocky McIntosh to boot. Briggs says in the story that he hasn’t thought about [...]

Chicago Next on Tap - (12/04)

It’s hard to refocus on the season after a tragedy as heartbreaking as Sean Taylor’s murder. However, the Chicago Bears are on tap for Thursday night’s game, and there is a chance, slim as it may be, that the Redskins could climb back into the playoff hunt with a victory against them. The problem is [...]
