    49ers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports) - (08/25)

Moments after San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Nolan announced that the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 draft would not be his starting quarterback at the start of the regular season, Nolan was asked about the perception that Alex Smith is now officially a bust. Smith will be holding a clipboard and many have already affixed him with the "bust" label. "The perception is wrong if that's the perception," Nolan said. He explained, "I think he's getting better and better right now. He needs consistency and continuity, which we all do.

Grip on QB job often tenuous - (08/24)

When an NFL team is winning, the quarterback is the most popular guy on the block. When it's losing, that role often falls to the backup quarterback. That's the nature of the position, and it indicates how much importance fans tend to place on it. As J.T. O'...

    Some vexing breakdowns - (08/23)

Two of the strengths of the 49ers last year were their secondary and their special teams. That wasn't the case in Chicago Thursday night. In little more than a half, Bears quarterback Joe Orton passed for 147 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and the 49ers'...

If it's possible to have fun while being victimized for two long kickoff returns, a blocked field goal and a blocked punt, the 49ers did it Thursday night. They ran up 425 yards, much of it against one of the tougher units in the NFL, and they beat the...
